When is the right time?

A common question we receive is, “When is the right time?” Many caregivers we speak with would answer this “as early as possible”.

Our team of hospice professionals specialize in end of life care. Below are some helpful tips to help you understand how someone may qualify for and benefit from hospice care.

Patients with advanced or terminal illness may be appropriate for hospice care if he or she has one or more of the following:

  • Physical decline; increased dependence
  • Sudden, unexpected weight loss
  • Decreased oral intake; related to worsening debility and/or dysphasia
  • Multiple comorbid conditions
  • Frequent or recurrent infections; UTI, pneumonia
  • Frequent, recent hospital visits
  • Advanced disease that for which the patient declines aggressive care

Some examples of end stage diseases that may qualify a patient for hospice are: Heart Diseases, Congestive Heart Failure, Lung Diseases, COPD, Kidney Disease, Dementia, Liver Disease, HIV/AIDS, Stroke or Coma.

Home Hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private health insurance plans. It is the philosophy of our nonprofit to care for all patients regardless of ability to pay.

How to Begin Hospice Care
Most patients are referred by a health care professional however anyone can call Sanctuary to discuss current health conditions and if a potential patient may be eligible.
